The final Night before Ramadan Self-Accountability for a Year gone by Shaikh Uthaymeen (Rahimahullaah)

A year has passed by since last Ramadan, upon every individual is to examine himself and study his affairs. What has he earned from good or bad in the days and nights of a whole year gone by, what has he sought from knowledge, what has he gained in memorization? It is assumed that knowledge and actions of a person increase with time, yet a great calamity for the one who find himself less knowledge through negligence than 12 months to the day… So examine your affairs…

Allaah ‘Azza wa Jal stated:

“Verily, the number of months with Allah is twelve months (in a year), so was it ordained by Allah on the Day when He created the heavens and the earth…”[Tawbah:36]

For indeed Allaah made this time organised upon days, months and years. These days and nights are stages that creation pass through stage by stage to the Hereafter, to the abode of eternity, either in paradise or in Hellfire.

Indeed these days are stages you traverse upon day after day until you end up at the end of your journey. Indeed everyday rather every moment that passes you by distance you from this world and draws you to the Hereafter.

Indeed these days and nights are not vacant and void (to he wasted in futility) rather they contain and store within them your actions, as a witness upon you for what you did, either good or bad.

Glad tidings to the servant who utilizes the opportunity (of the days and nights) in that which brings him closer to Allaah until his ending is a praise worthy one.

Glad tidings to the servant who takes heeds and admonition from the ever-changing and alternating way of this World and realizes the great wisdom of Allaah as Allaah states;

“Verily! In the creation of the heavens and the earth, and in the alternation of night and day, there are indeed signs for men of understanding.” [Al-‘Imran:190]
