Obedience to one’s parents during their lifetime and after their death is obligatory unless they enjoin sin, in which case they should not be obeyed because Allaah has commanded us to honour our parents in many places in His Book, such as when He says (interpretation of the meaning):
“And We have enjoined on man to be good and dutiful to his parents; but if they strive to make you join with Me (in worship) anything (as a partner) of which you have no knowledge, then obey them not. Unto Me is your return and I shall tell you what you used to do” [al-‘Ankaboot 29:8]
“Your Rabb has decreed that you worship none but Him, and that you be kind to parents. Whether one or both of them attain old age in your life, say not to them a word of contempt, nor repel them, but address them in terms of honor.” [al-Isra 17: 23]
Abu Huraira narrated that Allah’s Messenger (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “Let him be humbled into dust; let him be humbled into dust. It was said: Allah’s Messenger, who is he? He said: He who sees either of his parents during their old age or he sees both of them, but he does not enter Paradise.” (Muslim)
In another narration, he said: “It is one of the greatest sins that a man should curse his parents.” It was asked (by the people), “O Allah’s Messenger! How does a man curse his parents?” The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said, “The man abuses the father of another man and the latter abuses the father of the former, and abuses his mother then the latter abuses his mother.” (Bukhari)
